Guarana is a climbing plant native to the Amazon basin and especially common in Brazil. It produces an orange-redish berry that opens when ripe, revealing a thin veil of white flesh, partially covering a black seed. This combination gives it the appearance of a white eyeball, with a big black pupil. The seed is a central nervous system stimulant with thermogenic and diuretic properties. The guarana fruit has a high concentration of caffeine (2-5%), higher than coffee (2%) or tea (1%).
